The assessment was designed using the Holland Occupational Themes (RIASEC) in part because the U.S. Department of Labor and O*NET use them. O*NET has conducted interest profiler surveys of all 974 occupations in the past approximately 10 years in which individuals in each profession are rated on a scale of 1 to 7 for each trait. The resulting data set is a comprehensive weighting of RIASEC traits per O*NET career. Emsi (creator of Career Coach) has expanded this to include categories (known on O*NET as career clusters) and pathways by simply taking the average weights for all of the careers in each category/pathway. The Career Coach Assessment provides empirical question sets in which each question is correlated to a particular RIASEC trait. The user’s response to the question assists in ‘weighting’ their personal RIASEC interests in much the same way that the O*NET interest profiler surveys do.
