It is based off of the John Holland model. This is Career Coach's proprietary way of condensing that assessment. Career Coach has documentation on the work that has been completed.

What does "based on" have to do with validity and reliability?

The validity of the assessment matches up to how survey respondents are matching personality traits to occupations. The reliability comes from a stable source of government wage and employment data produced by the Employment and Training Administration at the Department of Labor. The data does change slightly from year to year, but not drastically.

The short assessment is a condensed version of O*NET's own survey tool (https://www.mynextmove.org/explore/ip) and the long assessment on Career Coach is pretty analogous to O*NET's survey. If anyone is looking for research to back up the methodology behind the assessment itself, there are quite a few references (behind paywalls, unfortunately) in the Journal of Applied Psychology and Journal of Vocational Behavior. This paper can give a good overview of the theory behind the work that turned into the O*NET surveys and our assessment: https://www.counseling.org/docs/david-kaplan's-files/nauta.pdf?sfvrsn=2
