How are majors organized on the application?

We have almost 200 different majors consisting of AA/AS degrees, certificates, and UC/CSU transfer degrees. This list was uploaded to the Administrator in the order we hoped to display the list on the Application (grouped by degree type, then alphabetically by description). The list appears correctly sorted in the Administrator but on the Application the order is completely different and seems to be based solely on program code.

Is there a way to organize the list of majors on the Application in a desired sort order or is the Application sort order hardcoded to something regardless of the order uploaded and displayed in the Administrator?

As uploaded to Administrator:

William,
Sorry that I didn't respond yesterday. I am investigating this issue and will either open a specific helpdesk ticket for your issue, or add another comment in this Post.

What happened with this?  I'm seeing the same thing at my site.  How do you fix this?

Also, if I need to delete all and then import all, what file type is used?  No documentation on the site as to the file format for upload capabilities.

On a related topic, why doesn't the AWARD TYPE field show AA-T Degree or AS-T Degree when selected?  Only the first four show a description when selected?

William / Rita,
1) I have attached screen shots that show one can sort the Major Codes via the Administrator. The best way to make sure that the way your lists are sorted is the say way the students view them, is to create a spreadsheet with your data, and sort the spreadsheet as you wish the students to see it, then import it via the Adminstrator Import button. (see the attached display)
The latest Users Guide has the instructions starting on page five, and can be found at the following link: https://cccnext.jira.com/wiki/display...

Vanessa,
The Major's sorting alphabetically is part of the 2.0 Release planned for September.

Just wanted to follow-up and find out if the majors will show alphabetically when a student applies, with the 2.0 release?

Hi Merrie,

Thanks very much for your ongoing assistance with this issue!

I would like to say however, that I have already arranged my majors list in the order I want it to appear on the Application. The order in Administrator however seems to have no effect on the order in the Application. The Application will always sort degrees in alphabetical order by Major_Code field, regardless of the order in the Administrator.

I also tried re-importing them from spreadsheet, per your suggestion, but found the sort order on the Application did not change.

Hopefully we can count on your continued investigation into this matter as it would be really helpful to our students to be able to see our degrees organized on the Application by type (AA/AS followed by Transfer Degrees followed by Certificates) rather than in the confusing order of their Major_Code value.

Thanks again!

William,
Thank you for this post.  I am experiencing the same problem and have tried re-importing as well but the sort order does not change.  If you hear anything please share.

Thank you!

So, What happened to this?  Also, there was some talk of being able to create interest areas (meta major) labels as headings and then list applicable programs beneath the headings.  What happened to this as well?  Have I missed something in the updates?

Thanks,
Rita

Thanks?
I looked through many of the release updates and didn't see any references to this unless it is in the new releases expected in 2018?

Rita,
Where I found reference to the Majors changing was for the approved change requests, by the Steering Committee, for the 2018 release.

Rita,

I've read the information for the request no. 2014-01 but the way I understand it, the update does not address the issue outlined in this thread.  This update seems to change the functionality to allow the "ability to filter the display of their Majors list in the (applications) by educational goal" and not change the requested functionality to allow for the sort order to be changed by major (title) description. The proposed solution is to develop the ability for colleges to align each major to one or more Education Goals <edu_goals> through added functionality in the Administrator.

What was requested in this thread was for the ability to sort or display majors as desired by the colleges, without changing major code or relying on the major code value for the sort order to be displayed to students.

Can you please confirm that in the March 2018 release, the ability for colleges to be able to determine the major sort order not be reliant on the major code value?

I can't confirm what the March 2018 release will or will not allow as I haven't seen specifics - only told it would "somewhat" address meta majors/interest area sorting.  As previously identified by me and others, we can sort our programs the way we want but when we import them into CCC Apply for student viewing they are re-sorted alphabetically.  We need the capability that allows a meta major type capability at minimum.  Ideally, there would a heading/title, let's say Health Careers.  Under that title, we would be able to list all degree and certificate programs that are related to Health Careers.  In one of my colleges case, that would be Nursing and EMT programs.  If you look at our updated website for each of our colleges, you'll see how we have listed our available programs by CAREER interest areas.  CCC Apply only allows A-Z alphabetically listed programs currently.  Does this help or is more information needed.  I know a couple of people on the steering committee and I was told interest areas/meta major sorting was coming out in the March release.  Again, I only have verbals and have not seen the actual March release notes.

All,
The Spring Release will not happen in March, and I do now know if the specific Release Date has been decided on.

As has been standard procedure for the last few releases, 30 days prior to the Spring Release there will be notifications and the new version will be in the Pilot environment for all Colleges to test.  The Release notes will be placed where all can preview what is included in the Release, and begin to test in Pilot.

There will be changes to how the Major's are organized, and because the application development has not been completed, as of yet, I do not have a complete answer for you as to how the Majors will display, or be organized.  It is good that those individuals on the Steering Committee are discussing the Project with their piers, however as I as not part of that discussion I am unable to speak to what was shared or how the information was presented.

Currently the Majors display in the MAJORID (a hidden field) order.  This is so that submitted applications continue to have the Major Code that they choose when they submitted their applications and the data is not corrupted when the Major's list changes, this field or code is independent of what is being displayed in the Administrator, or on the Application.
